Fauna

The Macin Mountains fauna, less studied, is characterized by a great diversity and a special importance, due to the presence of some rare species protected through international regulations.

Studies and research carried out over the years have identified:

    • insects: 1436 species;
    • amphibians: 7 species;
    • reptiles: 11 species;
    • birds: 181 species;
    • mammals: 47 species.

 Of the total number of species identified in MMNP, 37 species are strictly protected at international level and they are listed in the Birds Directive and the Bern Convention; for this reason, Macin Mountains have been included in the “List of the European zones important for birds”. Among the rare species protected at international level we mention: lepidoptera - Polia cherrug (endemism described only in this zone), Chersotis laeta măcini and Chersotis fibriola niculescui, reptiles – Spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca ibera), Four lined snake (Elaphe quatorlineata), Nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes montadoni), birds – Salker falcon (Falco cherrug), Long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinis), Isabelline wheather (Oenanthe isabelina), existing at the western limit of the worldwide habitat, Rook thrush (Monticola saxatilis), Bee eater (Merops apiaster), Orchard tit (Parus lugubris) etc. Among the mammal species we can mention: Red deer (Cervus elaphus), present in Dobrudja only in Macin Mountains, Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), Wild boar (Sus scrofa), Hare (Lepus europaeus), Fox (Vulpes vulpes), Wild cat (Felis silvestris), Lynx (Lynx lynx) – identified at Hamcearca, yet an uncertain presence in the habitat, Mardled polecat (Vormela peregusna), Beech marten (Martes foina), etc. The Golden jackal (Canis aureus) has appeared and bred excessively over the last years, being the main predator for the mammals in the park.

There are some rare species that present a special scientific interest and are also interesting for the Mountains biodiversity, of which we mention: Spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca ibera) - monument of nature, Four lined snake (Elaphe quatorlineata) which is the biggest and rarest snake in the country, Steppe polecat (Mustella eversmani), Horn-nosed viper (Vipera ammodytes montadoni), Cinereous vulture (Aegypus monachus), Black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), Roller (Coracias garrulus). The list of species of conservative interest is presented in Annex 2.3.2.
