Fauna
The Macin Mountains fauna, less studied, is characterized by a great diversity and a special importance, due to the presence of some rare species protected through international regulations.
Studies and research carried out over the years have identified:
- insects: 1436 species;
- amphibians: 7 species;
- reptiles: 11 species;
- birds: 181 species;
- mammals: 47 species.
Of the total number of species identified in MMNP, 37 species are strictly protected at international level and they are listed in the Birds Directive and the Bern Convention; for this reason,
There are some rare species that present a special scientific interest and are also interesting for the Mountains biodiversity, of which we mention: Spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca ibera) - monument of nature, Four lined snake (Elaphe quatorlineata) which is the biggest and rarest snake in the country, Steppe polecat (Mustella eversmani), Horn-nosed viper (Vipera ammodytes montadoni), Cinereous vulture (Aegypus monachus), Black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), Roller (Coracias garrulus). The list of species of conservative interest is presented in Annex 2.3.2.
