Landscape

The specific landscapes in Macin Mountains are similar to the forest landscape in the Southern Europe, due to the presence of sub-Mediterranean and Balkan forests and the Euro-Asian steppes defined by saxicole vegetation, spread in this zone on the largest area in Dobrudja and Romania. Originality of landscapes results mainly from megalithic granite formations and from the contrast between Balkan mesophylous broad-leaved forests, xerothermal sub-Mediterranean and forest steppe with sub-Mediterranean forests.

Here follow the main landscape categories identified in the MMNP:

  • Arid bedrock landscapes on the blank peaks of the Main Crest of Macin Mountains and all over Pricopan Crest.

  • Disintegrating granite rocks landscape with bizarre archaic forms, especially on Pricopan Crest.

  • Balkan, Mediterranean, Central European forest landscapes which make up a great colour variety of leaves on the median line of the mountain side and on the valleys at the bottom and also surround the blank peaks like a belt.

  • Steppe forests with Dobrudjan peony in which the sinuous forms of the white oaks make a pleasant contrast with the red shade of the peony and the blue colour of the Dobrudjan bell.

  • Beech forests with an impressive aspect due to the height and column form of the Dobrudjan beeches.

  • Clearings with interferences of Pontic, Asian and Central European ecosystems, with herbaceous species that reveal an impressive colour mixture and include isolate white oaks, flowering ash, European ash, sessile oak, Dobrudjan olive, elm leaved spiraea, nettle tree, cranberry, beam tree.

  • Steep slopes on the western side of Macin Mountains and Pricopan Crest used as contemplating places over the wavy crests, the sinuous forms of the Danube Chanels and as watching points for raptor birds.

  • Cannions dug by water courses which in spite of the poor water flow create an impressive image due to the small waterfalls formed on different levels that alternate on small distances.
